SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) -- A Dallas man had pleaded guilty in the shooting death of his grandmother in Denison nearly a year ago.

The Grayson County District Attorney's Office said 23-year-old Jerkeylon Norvell entered a plea agreement.

Gunfire at the Circle Apartments on February 13, 2020 claimed the life of a woman police found in the doorway of her apartment. The woman died from a gunshot wound to her chest.

That night, Norvell surrendered to a Sherman police officer saying he needed to go to jail because he shot someone in Denison.

"Under the murder charge we don't have to prove motive," said Assistant District Attorney Don Hoover. "We try to find a motive or why... why someone would do this to a loved family member, and it just makes no sense why he would come up here and kill her like that. We looked.  I looked through all of the evidence to try and find why he did this. Wasn't able to, but there is no doubt that he killed her."

Norvell was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He is required to serve at least 25 years of that term before becoming eligible for parole.
