(KTEN) -- The National Weather Service says a "major winter storm" is taking aim at Texoma.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for most of the KTEN viewing area from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, with the possibility of heavy, blowing snow combined with possible "near-blizzard conditions," the weather service said.

"Keep in mind air temperatures have been below freezing; ground temperatures are going to be below freezing. So whatever falls will be sticking. That could cause some issues," said KTEN Chief Meteorologist Mandy Bailey.

How much snow will be covering lawns and driveways?

"The highest totals are still to be determined, but we're expecting at least several inches out of this system," Bailey said.

And those sub-freezing temperatures will linger through most of next week.

Schools were closed across Texoma Thursday morning as bone-chilling temperatures continued and freezing precipitation fell across the region. Some schools will also be closed to students on Friday.

Winter Storm Watch through 6 p.m. Monday, February 15.
