GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KTEN) -- Susie Holamon, the founder of Geary Foster Foundations, pioneered an eight-home foster community near Howe.

The first home on the 11-acre Geary Girls Ranch was operational in August. Holamon said each home costs around $300,000, has five bedrooms, four bathrooms and houses between 4 and 6 children.

"It's an unusual concept in foster care," said Holamon, herself a former foster child. "It enables these parents to help the age of children they want to bring into their family, they could possibly adopt, any number of things."

Holamon said they are also building what she calls a "foster closet."

"It is like a free store for foster families in Grayson County," she said. "We'll have buckets and shelves full of clothing, toys, books, furniture."

Holamon said an environment like this creates a better support system for the children.

"The more homes we can build, the sooner we can build them, the sooner we can put our wonderful parents in more places to start helping more kids."
