Sherman shelter getting new adoption trailer

SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) -- The Sherman Animal Shelter needs a new adoption trailer. The vehicle's air conditioning has failed at the worst possible time.

"The trailer is kind of outdated," said shelter spokesperson Riley Krueger. "The windows are cracked on it, it's just kind of run down and we need an updated one."

So the city has agreed to fund a new trailer to transport dogs and cats to adoption events. Price tag: $45,000.

"We did know this adoption trailer --- which goes out about three days a week and, of course, adopts out cats and dogs -- was getting towards its lifespan," city spokesperson Nate Strauch said.

It's not just the AC at issue; other problems include a broken window, not enough room in kennels, and a leak in the roof.

"I think they need it because sometimes when it's too hot when I'm leaving, I just feel unsafe leaving with them... you know, making sure they stay cool enough, sometimes I have to have them ride with me just to make sure they stay safe," Krueger said.

Staffers at the Sherman Animal Shelter became concerned about keeping pets cool in the adoption trailer.

The shelter says 10 to 12 animals are being adopted each week thanks to the trailer making its rounds to different locations.

"This is an incredibly important part of what the shelter does," Strauch said. "This trailer is working, functioning well for the people that use it every day, and for the animals also."
