DENTON, Texas - Stefanie Watson hit a three-run double in the top of the fourth inning as the East Central University softball team coasted to an 8-2 victory Thursday over Incarnate Word in the midst of a three-way series, which also included host Texas Woman's University at Pioneer Field.
TWU upended ECU 10-2 in six innings in the final game of the day.
The Lady Tigers moved to 14-16-1 overall on the season. TWU improved to 10-24-1 and UIW fell to 15-15.
ECU 8, Incarnate Word 2
Watson, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in and a run scored, was one of four Lady Tigers to collect two hits as ECU compiled 11 for the game.
Stacia Lemons went 2-for-3 with a double and scored three times. Kasey Barber also went 2-for-3 and scored once and Kelly Littleton was 2-for-4 with a double.
Randee Crockett (5-4) picked up the pitching victory as she scattered nine hits, walked one and struck out one as both UIW runs were earned. Crockett tossed all seven innings, surrendering a single run each in the first and fourth innings.
The Lady Tigers overcame a 2-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning, triggered by Lemons' leadoff double to right-center. Lemons then advanced to third off Laura Kuestersteffen's bunt single. A double-steal led to ECU's first run as Kuestersteffen swiped second and Lemons raced home.
After Hillary Hughes reached first on a fielder's choice and Barber drew a walk to load up the bases, Watson came through with her big three-run double to make it 4-2.
The Lady Tigers upped the count to 5-2 in the sixth when Hughes was hit by a pitch and ultimately scored off a wild pitch.
ECU then staged a three-run seventh as Watson led off with a double and eventually scored on Stephannie Larriba's double to left-center. Hughes later hit a two-run single in the inning to cap off the scoring.
UIW starter Melissa Perez (8-4) was tagged with the loss after working 6 1/3 innings. She also led her team from the plate by going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Texas Woman's 10, ECU 2
Littleton's two-run double in the first inning led to the Lady Tigers' only two runs.
TWU hurler Ashley Martin (1-4) allowed the two earned runs off five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in capturing the victory.
Dana McLaren (5-8) was charged with the loss after working five complete innings. Kayla Shepherd came on and worked 1/3 of an inning before the contest was ended on the run rule.
ECU's only other hits came on a single apiece from Hughes, Kelli Dyson, Barber and Lauren Parson.
Rachel Johnson went 3-for-3 and knocked in three runs and scored once for the Pioneers, who pounded out 11 hits.
ECU's next action will be next Friday (March 28) in the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in Durant. The Lady Tigers will play three games on Friday against Eastern New Mexico at 10:30 a.m.; West Texas A&M at 4:30 p.m.; and Angelo State at 6:30 p.m. ECU then plays two more games on Saturday (March 29) and two on Sunday (March 30).
