'Porch pirates' can also target mailbox contents

MADILL, Okla. -- The Christmas season is prime time for "porch pirates" trolling neighborhoods looking for packages on doorsteps.

Aside from tracking your holiday gifts, Marshall County Sheriff Danny Cryer urges you to also look after your mailbox.

"We've had at least one call of a suspect vehicle who was driving from mailbox to mailbox. They weren't associated with the post office in any way," Cryer said. "We believe they were looking for Christmas cards that contain cash, or items ordered off the internet small enough to shove into a mailbox."

The sheriff suggests installing a video doorbell to help record thieves should they strike.

Texas recently passed a law making package theft a felony. Cryer hopes the Sooner State will follow suit.

"A law of that nature here in Oklahoma would discourage any would-be thieves, especially during this time of year, so I would absolutely support that," he said.
