Fire safety tips for the holidays

Posted: Updated:

ADA, Okla. -- Ada firefighters are appealing to homeowners to be safe when setting up Christmas decorations.

Use extension cords only when necessary when lighting up holiday displays, and always be sure to use a type that can handle the requirements.

"This time of year, everybody's drawing a lot more power than they used ... throughout the rest of the year because they have all the lights, the decorations," Deputy Chief Joe Allen said. "If they have electric heat, they're drawing electric heat, so it causes resistance heating."

And don't forget about giving space heaters plenty of room and respect.

"A lot of times they have them right next to a couch, right next to a bed or something like that, and they get them too close to combustibles," Allen said. "Keep about five feet between space heaters and any kind of combustible."

If your family puts a live tree in the living room, be sure to give it the maintenance it requires.

"If you don't keep those things watered daily, they'll dry out," Allen explained. "It takes less than 30 seconds ... to be fully engulfed, which will take your house away from you."

Firefighters also suggest that you check smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
