City, ISD consider the future of Denison education - KTEN.com - Texoma news, weather and sports

DENISON, Texas -- With less than one month until the dawn of a new decade, the Denison Independent School District was discussing a plan for the next 10 years at a joint meeting with the City Council on Monday.

In November, voters approved a plan for the district to expand two elementary schools to deal with explosive growth.

"You've got to manage that growth, and the only way to do that is to work in harmony," Denison ISD Superintendent Dr. Henry Scott said, explaining the meeting with city officials.

The district will also be introducing its 10-year facility plan, which is essentially an outline of what the district plans to do over the next decade.

It all starts with a demographic study to find out where the growth is in the city.

"That master plan will not only be a 10-year, but it'll be a lot like a benchmark. At five years, where do we plan to be? Ten years, where do we plan to be? That's going to be based on growth," Scott said.

The last 10-year plan completely restructured the district's facilities, with new schools being built and others re-purposed. Dr. Scott doesn't think the blueprint for the 2020s will be as intense but, they still have to ask these questions.

"The schools that are older... are we going to keep those in operation? Are we going to make a decision to re-purpose those buildings?" he asked. "There really is a lot involved in developing this plan."

The school district's joint meeting with the City Council is a step in creating a better community.

"The city is responsible for housing and jobs. The school district is responsible for providing quality schools, and all of that goes together to form a great community," Scott said.
