SHERMAN, Texas --  The 23rd annual Bob Skaggs Memorial Food Drive benefits the Salvation Army of Grayson County. It's the organization's biggest such event in the State of Texas.

The drive only lasts two-and-a-half days, but that's all they need. They bring in so many donations, it nearly stocks the Salvation Army pantry for an entire year.

"When we very first started doing this, it was so tiny," said Wendy Vellotti, Bob Skaggs' daughter. "We would do it in the back of the trucks, and now to fill up semis... like that's just so empowering, so amazing."

They're accepting food and cash donations at the Walmart at the intersection of US 75 and US 82 in Sherman until Wednesday at noon.

On Wednesday, they received a generous $5,000 check. Can you say "shopping spree"?

"We bought pallets, pallets of canned foods, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes," Velotti said.

Bob Skaggs was heavily involved in the annual food drive until his death; the campaign was renamed to honor his work.

"It's because of what was started with that family," Salvation Army Maj. Tex Ellis Jr. said. "This drive enables us to provide food literally all year."

"If you think about it, that's not in their budget, they don't have to worry about that," Velloti added. "They can help in other ways if we can just do this part."
