SHERMAN, Texas -- One person died when a house burned in Sherman early Friday morning.

The flames were reported just after 1 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Ricketts Street, near Fairview Park.

Neighbor Ray Dagenais said he was awakened by the commotion next door.

"I've never seen so much smoke," he said. "It was scary, because they banged on the doors and told us to get out because they were afraid this house would catch on fire. I'm going to flat tell you: If it wasn't for those firemen and the Lord first."

Dagenais said a couple lived in the 1,000 square foot home that had stood on the quiet residential street for the last 71 years.

"They put him in the ambulance and I got to thinking... is that him or her? Because we thought someone had to still be in there with their dogs. They've got three dogs, and they said two of didn't make it and one of them ran off," Dagenais said.

The man later died at a hospital; his wife was also hospitalized. Their names were not released. Two of the dogs also perished.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
