Family shelters benefit from Ardmore toy drive

Posted: Updated:

ARDMORE, Okla. -- Several Ardmore businesses are looking to give back this Christmas season, and their annual toy drive has a new focus this year.

"Not everyone has the cards dealt their way, so I believe one toy to one kid that wouldn't have got a toy is amazing," said Aubry Harris, owner of Two Frogs Grill.

His restaurant has started collecting for its 10th annual toy drive, partnering with Billingsley Ford and Toyota of Ardmore.

But this year, the businesses are adding an emphasis on giving back to the children and family shelters in the city.

"One more bed, or one more opportunity for a child to be put in a home that can be helped to put him out of harm's way can give him some hope, something to look forward to," Harris said.

Kaylyn Weldon-Gary of the Community Children's Shelter said the effort is crucial to her organization's work.

"We rely on donations from our community supporters for about half of our budget, so half of our operating cost comes from our community support," she said.

Donations pouring in during the holiday season are even more important, because for most the kids at the shelter, it's their chance at a happy holiday.

"Many of the children that live with us have not ever had a joyful, or a joyful holiday period at all, and often it's very sad for them," Weldon-Gray said.

If you're interested in helping the cause, you can drop off your donations at any of the three businesses. Two Frogs will hold a live auction on December 6, with proceeds going toward this drive.
