ADA, Okla. -- Ada City Schools made its aviation program a priority about three-and-a-half years ago. The district has now unveiled a new aviation lab as well as new STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) classrooms.

"Additions were made possible by bond issue funds and grants that were provided by various partners like Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, American Airlines," said Superintendent Mike Anderson.

The program -- and interest around aviation -- have grown so much in the past three years that the school has started implementing aviation education as early as possible.

"We now have STEM labs in every building we have," Anderson said. "Aviation is experienced with our pre-K and kindergarten kids even... all the way from pre-K through 12th grade."

The superintendent hopes kids who gain interest in aviation at an early age will already have an advantage, whenever they graduate.

"There's no question in my mind that as we go through, we're going to have students with their pilots license before they leave Ada High School," Anderson said. "We're extremely excited about the opportunity that's going to present."

And with these new classrooms up and running, the upperclassmen in the program may find their way to success, like recent alumnus Tanner Gillum.

"He's already soloing and flying an airplane, so in a matter of months, we've had kids leave us and go onto post-secondary opportunity," Anderson said.
