ARDMORE, Okla. -- Hardy Murphy Coliseum is hosting the 25th annual Wild Horse and Burro Expo this weekend.

The two-day event gives people a chance to both adopt 85 horses that had been roaming free on public land.

"Giving these wild horses a home to be -- instead of just having the government take care of them," said the coliseum's general manager Jeffery Storms. "We like hosting events that benefit everybody."

Individuals who have adopted wild animals in the past are also invited back to share their stories and show off their horses.

The event continues Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Prospective adopters must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse. Applicants can receive up to $1,000 to adopt an untrained animal.

The Bureau of Land Management says it has found homes for more than 235,000 wild horses since the adoption program began in 1973.
