CARTWRIGHT, Okla. -- Two household pets perished Friday afternoon when fire swept through a residence in Cartwright, a community west of Colbert in Bryan County.

Firefighters were called to the home on 1st Avenue around 1:45 p.m. after a woman who lives there was awakened from a nap by a barking dog.

"She was running down the street hysterically, 'Help me! Help me! Help me!'" said neighbor April Davis. "I came out to see why she needed help and she needed a 911 call, the house was on fire."

The resident was not injured, but she and first responders were unable to get back in the building to rescue the dog and a cat from the flames and smoke.

"That's been my neighbor for 20 years, and we love them," Davis said. "We're sad."

A tanker truck was brought in to supply water to first responders.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
