PARIS, Texas -- A vacant commercial building across the street from the old Grand Theater caught on fire Monday morning in downtown Paris.

The fire department got the call at around 6:40 a.m., and heavy smoke continued rising from the scene on Lamar Avenue for hours after that.

"Due to a limited water situation and limited access to the building, it took us a long time for us to get in there and actually start making headway and extinguishing the fire," said Assistant Fire Chief Thomas McMonigle.

Significant damage was reported to both the outside and inside of the two-story brick building. Neighboring structures suffered smoke damage, but no physical damage.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
