ADA, Okla. — The second annual Home for the Holidays event is now underway at the Pontotoc Animal Welfare Society in Ada.

During the week-long drive, the shelter is asking for donations to help these pets stay comfortable while at PAWS.

"Animals love it," said PAWS manager Dana Shannon. "They get all kinds of donations like pillows, toys, food, beds, blankets — especially for the winter — heaters, all kinds of goodies."

Another key to the campaign is encouraging adoptions to at least temporarily solve an overcrowding problem at the shelter.

"When we cannot find rescues, we do try to do things like this so that people can come in. We get new dogs on a daily, weekly basis," Shannon said.

For every adoption or donation people make during the week, they can award a point to the fire or police department. It's a friendly competition between the departments, but they know the event is about much more than bragging rights.

"We like to help out and raise donations for agencies like this," said Fire Chief Rob Johnson. "It eases the burden of the budget of the operating expenses of the shelter."

Home for the Holidays continues through Saturday, with an adoption and food drive at the shelter, located at 1200 Sandy Creek Drive in Ada. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It's is a warm-up for what should be a busy holiday season for PAWS.
