Van Alstyne educator faces child abuse charge

VAN ALSTYNE, Texas -- An assistant principal at Van Alstyne Middle School has been charged with continuous abuse of a child, a first degree felony.

Police said Kirby Glynn Smith, 50, was arrested Tuesday after a juvenile male made an outcry.

Smith was teaching at Cockrill Middle School in McKinney at the time of the allegations. According to an affidavit, Smith was a friend of the accuser's family.

"This employee is no longer employed at Van Alstyne ISD," said VISD Superintendent Dr. David Brown in a written statement. "At this time, we are unaware of any victims at Van Alstyne ISD."

Brown said his district is working with the McKinney Police Department as the investigation continues.

Smith's bond is set at $500,000.
