DENISON, Texas -- A commercial building that's been part of the downtown Denison landscape since the turn of the 20th century caught fire and later collapsed on Wednesday morning.

Denison firefighters got the call around 10 a.m. about smoke in the two-story structure at 317 West Main Street. The fire started in the rear of the building, then made its way inside and all the way to the front.

Larry Donohoe watched it happen.

"When I got here, the fire trucks were already in the back, the smoke was getting pretty intense, but it wasn't intense in front yet," he said.

Within minutes, flames engulfed the Luxor Nails & Spa building and the structure collapsed about an hour later.

"The nail salon right behind the dry cleaners is completely gone now," said witness Michael McMinn. "I could see smoke coming from Pottsboro where I live."

Firefighting units from Sherman, North Texas Regional Airport, Durant, Calera and Howe provided assistance to their Denison counterparts.

"I can't say enough about how public works responded with us to boost our pressure," said Denison Fire Department Chief Gregg Loyd. "We got ladders from all outside our community to help us out with this downtown issue. Everybody knows the exposures to downtown and how quickly these things can get from something small to an entire city block."

Late Wednesday afternoon, firefighters scrambled to douse hot spots that re-ignited on the roof of an adjoining building.

There were no initial reports of injuries, but businesses on either side of Luxor Nails suffered significant damage.

"All the smoke damage in the adjoining structures sucked up that hole, so it actually pulled the smoke away from the adjoining structures," Loyd said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Property records show the two-story building that burned dates to the year 1900. It has a 5,700 square foot retail space on the first floor and a residential space on the second floor.

The burned building is across the street from Denison City Hall.
