WEWOKA, Okla. -- A former Wewoka police officer is jailed after being charged with sexually assaulting a minor.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Wendell Birt, 33, was accused by a 14-year-old high school student who told school officials that he began communicating with her via Snapchat in May.

Brit allegedly asked for -- and received -- sexually explicit photos from the girl over several months.

OSBI said the former police officer allegedly met the girl and raped her three different times. Brit is facing multiple charges, including rape, rape by instrumentation, and lewd or indecent proposals to a child under 16.

He was arrested Monday by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is being held at the Caddo County Jail. Bond was set at $500,000.

Brit recently left the Wewoka Police Department and had been serving as the director of the Delaware Nation Security Services.

"He is no longer employed with Delaware Nation, and we will cooperate with all investigations," a spokesman for the tribe said.
