DENISON, Texas -- Downtown Denison is about to get a big facelift starting next spring.

But before that happens, city officials want to make sure that all businesses remain accessible during the makeover.

The Denison Development Foundation has granted $2,500 to Designing Downtown Denison (D3) to help renovate three alleyways.

"We've got a major redevelopment effort that's going to begin at the beginning of 2020, and this will help businesses prepare for that," said William Myers of the Denison Development Alliance. "There's going to be a time -- maybe a week or two -- that some businesses won't have access to the front door."

D3 is a project that consists of reconstructing the downtown area with a park, garden, and more walking space. The main purpose of the alley renovations is to make it easier for people get to retail merchants using a back door and ramp while construction is underway.

"We want people to feel comfortable as they're walking down the alley," Denison Main Street director Donna Dow said. "We're also adding lighting and signage for the back doors, and numbering so emergency services can access the businesses."

But the renovations won't stop at those three alleys.

"We're focusing these grants on Phase One to help those businesses first," Myers explained. "We're hoping as Phase Two and Three come along for this streetscape, we'll be able to do this grant again and help businesses out with future phases."

Myers added that the alleyway renovations are a short-term solution during the construction, and the D3 project will offer permanent improvements for customers and businesses.
