ARDMORE, Okla. -- Revamping Ardmore's Depot Park has been on the city's wish list for nearly a decade now.

The project really started to gain momentum within the past three years, and on Tuesday, workers started construction on the Depot Park Plaza. The project was made possible through a grant from the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.

"That's a $600,000 matching grant," said Jeff DiMiceli, general manager of the project. "We had to raise the funds to match that, and we have those either in hand or committed."

The grant was able to finance most of the project, but the Ardmore Main Street Authority is raising funds to give the plaza its finishing touches.

"We're still applying for grants and looking for sponsorships like that," DiMiceli said. "In the next couple of months, we'll do kind of a general public campaign."

The plaza's construction won't interfere with any businesses in the downtown district.

"No; the only thing that's down there is the depot, and Main Street owns that depot, so we regulate how it's used and when it's used," DiMiceli said.

People around Ardmore think the plaza could be the town's staple when it's complete.

"The move of the Mercy Train downtown has made this a signature spot," Ardmore resident John Grant said. "This will be a go-to area for people traveling on the highways -- certainly now and in time."
