ADA, Okla. -- Police in Ada shot and killed a person Saturday morning as officers were trying to deal with a domestic dispute.

The incident happened at a residence in the 900 block of Arlington Street. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the case, said police were called at 9:45 a.m.

"As officers tried to speak with the 29-year-old man who lived in the apartment, an altercation broke out between him and police," the OSBI said in a written statement.

Four officers were at the scene when -- 15 minutes later -- dispatchers were alerted that shots had been fired.

The suspect, later identified as Jeffrey Peterson, was pronounced dead at the apartment. His name was not immediately released.

One officer was injured; he was treated at a local hospital and released.

"The suspect and the woman involved in the domestic disturbance were not in a relationship," the OSBI said, adding that the district attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified after the agency's report has been submitted.
