It's North Texas Giving Day in Grayson County

Posted: Updated:

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas -- Thursday is North Texas Giving Day, an open door for non-profits to bring attention to their work... and to raise money.

Forty-five non-profit agencies in Grayson County are participating in the event that encompasses some 2,700 organizations across the region.

Last year, $48 million was was raised during the 18-hour event.

"This is a huge opportunity to reach people to whom we haven't reached before, and for people to know about what services and what projects are being conducted in our Grayson County community," said Laurie Mealy, executive director at Habitat for Humanity of Grayson County. "We've got two families who are in the process of having their homes built and will be moving in just within the next month or two or three. this gives an opportunity to look ahead to the many other families who need homes as well."

The funds raised on Thursday will have a long-lasting impact in the community.

"We use that money, depend on that income, to support our various social service programs, including our rent and utility assistance, our Pathway to Hope program for families and our shelter for those homeless individuals that are trying to get back on their feet," said Betty Schlesinger from The Salvation Army of Sherman.

North Texas Giving Day ends Thursday at midnight. Click here to find a participating organization and donate online.

The Communities Foundation of North Texas, which organizes the fundraising effort, says it's the largest community-wide giving event in the nation.
