TISHOMINGO, Okla. -- The Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge is working toward expanding hunting access around the park.

Starting this fall, hunters visiting the refuge will be able to hunt waterfowl animals like ducks and geese, and hunters will be able to range over a wider area of the facility.

"That includes the area south of the Washita River, the wetlands located south of the Washita River with access to those wetlands using that river," refuge manager Rick Cantu explained.

The refuge is also working to permit archery deer hunts and turkey hunting, although permits from the state Department of Wildlife will be required.

Feral hogs will also be added to the hunting access at Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge.

"Because they're an invasive species; they're a species that we actually want to eliminate from the refuge," Cantu said.

Deer hunting should be available in the fall of 2020, and the turkey hunt should be available in the spring of 2021.

"I think it will be positive, it usually is," Cantu said. "Any time you can provide additional recreation opportunity -- whether it's hunting, fishing, wildlife photography or wildlife observation -- I think that's a plus."
