HOWE, Texas -- The Howe Police Department continues to investigate the murder of 19-year-old Cory Petty at the Pradera mobile home community.

Police said Petty was found severely beaten on August 27 in his residence along US 75. He died from his injuries on Saturday.

"I was kind of in shock," said neighbor Keri Hernandez. "It's a really quiet community. We all feel very safe here. Most people know everybody, so to hear that somebody passed away the way that they did was pretty crazy."

Petty's family and neighbors said he was a very caring and loving man, as well as a great father to his one-year-old child, with another baby on the way.

"He was a great guy," neighbor Clayton Stalling said. "They were always helping us, and my son was always helping them."

Howe police are investigating Petty's death as a murder, and have requested the assistance of the Texas Rangers.
