ANNA, Texas -- The playground at Sherley Heritage Park in downtown Anna is being built by volunteers from all over the city this week -- from neighbors to firefighters.

"People keep coming back, and those who volunteer for a couple hours end up staying for six or eight sometimes," said volunteer Stan Carver. "The heat's not stopping them."

The city is paying for the playground equipment. The 900-square-foot structure will incorporate elements of Anna's history, including the train depot that helped create the city.

"When it's done, you're going to see a mini water tower that's going to look similar to the water tower that's downtown we're going to refurbish," City Manager Jim Proce said. "You're going to see a mini train depot that's going to be a playhouse."

There's no arguing that Anna, Texas has a growing population. City officials say the biggest reward is bringing the people of Anna together, and recognizing how it all began.

"I think it's going to be really great for families to come out and gather with their children, and for everybody to get together and get to know one another even more and better," said Jennifer Watson with the city's planning and development division.

Construction of the playground started on Monday, and the work is expected to be complete by Saturday.
