ARDMORE, Okla. -- There was excitement in the air at Ardmore Animal Care Saturday as people came out to help Clear the Shelters.

When the day ended, 53 dogs and cats had found loving new homes.

"It's exhilarating," said Kasey Renteria, the shelter's executive director. "It's very seldom that we have empty cages, and it's just bittersweet to see them all walking out the door. We've become attached to them, but we're glad that they're going to a home."

This is the third year that KTEN has participated in the nationwide initiative to bring awareness to the struggles faced by animal shelters.

"It wakens everybody to the fact of how many shelter animals need help, and it gets everybody out here looking," Renteria said.

"What's cool is, as you go by the cages, as sad as it can be at times, you just see that it changes and kind of affects these dogs," Durant resident Alyssa Harris said. "They need it... they need that love."

People like Melia Hosier of Ardmore came looking for a new furry friend to take home.

"I've been wanting a dog for a while, really wanted one," she said. "This one kinda just spoke to me."

The sobering truth is: As clear as the shelter is after Saturday's event, the cages will start filling again.

"There will be new animals arriving still every day, so you can still come out next week or next month," said Renteria. "There will always be animals to be adopted."

So while Clear The Shelters may be over for 2019, it's really never too late to find your new best friend.
