DENISON, Texas -- A man opened fire on Denison police officers attempting to serve a felony warrant on Thursday evening.

Police spokesman Lt. Mike Eppler said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at an address in the 100 block of Doolittle Street, near North Texas Regional Airport.

"Officers were able to return fire and after a short period of time, the suspect was taken into custody," he said.

The suspect, identified as Prince Nelson, 28, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Texoma Medical Center. No police personnel were hurt.

"We feel anxious; we feel threatened in our neighborhood," neighbor Jim Caywood said. "It's kind of unsafe right now; everybody's on edge."

Nelson is facing a variety of charges, including multiple counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, deadly conduct, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and violating parole. Bond was set at $900,000.

Eppler said the Texas Rangers are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

"It's scary, but at that same time, it's a  blessing that you find out everybody's OK," Denison police Chief Mike Gudgel said. "I don't understand why in today's society, why people think it's OK to shoot at the police."
