SHERMAN, Texas -- With classes starting, students and parents have been obsessed with wardrobe items and school supplies.

But what about vaccinations?

"Everyone's going back to school, and it's a wonderful thing," said Amanda Ortez of the Grayson County Health Department. "We want to make sure they're immunized, they're vaccinated, they're ready to go."

It's important for parents to make sure their kids are up-to-date on all their shots.

"The number one priority of the vaccination is prevention of disease, and that's key and essential to starting the year off right," Ortez said.

On Wednesday, the Grayson County Health Department had plenty of patients lining up for shots.

"They were maxed out all over," said parent Francheska Owens. "Since we live in a small area, Denison was not giving out shots; Sherman wasn't giving out shots; so we kind of got it really late."

Texas requires all students to have shots including DTP; polio; measles, mumps and rubella; and hepatitis B (among others). Oklahoma has similar requirements.

"They have to have them to go into 7th grade," Owens said.

"It varies depending on what grade they're in," Ortez added.

There are some exceptions for religious or health issues. Any exemptions must be approved by the school district, but the health department doesn't see many of those in Grayson County.

"We all know that there's measles, there's mumps, there's outbreaks throughout the United States, and we certainly don't want that to happen in the community," Ortez said. "If it's preventable, why not prevent that type of disease?"
