PARIS, Texas -- Paris police say an elderly woman was severely beaten and stabbed while trying to fight off a home invasion robbery suspect Wednesday morning.

Chief Bob Hundley said officers responding to a 911 call at 8 a.m. found a suspect in the victim's residence in the 2100 block of Clarksville Street.

"The suspect jumped through a window and was captured outside the residence by other officers," Hundley said in a written statement.  "The suspect had a gunshot wound to one of his legs."

Police are withholding the identity of the 78-year-old victim.

"She does have significant injuries; stab wounds, broken leg and a skull fracture, and has been admitted to a local hospital," Hundley said.

The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Daniel M. Roberts of Paris, was jailed after getting treatment for his wound. He is initially facing charges of felony burglary; Chief Hundley said other charges are pending.
