SHERMAN, Texas -- A man suspected of impersonating a police officer was arrested late Monday night by Sherman officers.

Police spokesman Sgt. Brett Mullen said dispatchers got a call from a woman who was suspicious about an unmarked vehicle with flashing red-and-blue lights that attempted to pull her over in the 2600 block of East Lamar Street.

She said the car -- described as a gray Chevrolet Malibu -- sped past her after she stopped on the side of the road.

Police said they tracked down the vehicle on US 82 and arrested Cory Allen Tutaj of Denison.

"We did locate a little portable red-and-blue light bar that did flash red-and-blue lights, and then also located under two ounces or marijuana in the vehicle," Mullen said.

Tutaj, 27, was arrested and is facing a felony charge of impersonating a public servant and a misdemeanor drug charge. He didn't display a badge or say anything to arresting officers, but turning on fake police lights was enough.

"Every reasonable person knows that if red-and-blue lights come on behind you, that you are required to pull over to the side of the road," Mullen said. "By that act of just turning on those red-and-blue lights, getting the car to pull over, that then meets the elements of the offense."

Denison police are following up with their Sherman colleagues to see if this same suspect may be linked to an impersonation case in Denison several months ago.
