SHERMAN, Texas -- Most school supplies get an extra discount in Texas this weekend.

The sales tax holiday is designed to help parents with back-to-school shopping expenses. Most school supplies, backpacks, clothing and shoes priced under $100 qualify for the exemption.

"This is actually the closest tax-free that we've had to the start of school," said Terry Anderson, general manager of the JCPenney store in Sherman Town Center. "With it being just one week away we're really expecting a lot more traffic... ready to bring on some great deals for the customers."

Retail workers say the busiest sales day is typically Saturday.

The tax holiday in Texas runs through Sunday night. Buyers will save about $8 on every $100 of qualifying merchandise.

A similar back-to-school event took place in Oklahoma last weekend.
