SHERMAN, Texas -- The youngest students in Sherman have been getting a taste of what's to come at Kinder Camp.

The district launched the free three-day program this week, and about half of new enrollees attended.

"I learned about counting," said Witten, one of the participants.

Sory Elementary School Principal Steven Traw was enthusiastic about Kinder Camp.

"It's been great. It's been fun for the kids. It's been fun for the teachers," he said. "I think it's helped with the parents to kind of relax a little more, and kind of take a deep breath and say, 'The kids are going to be all right.'"

About 250 youngsters spent three days getting an inside look at what kindergarten will be like when classes begin for real on August 14.

"The first week is very overwhelming because we're teaching so many new rules and so many things, so it's giving them a good chance to come in and get acclimated to it," kindergarten teacher Heather Baker explained.

The turnout for Kinder Camp was higher than they expected at Sory Elementary.

"We were hoping for a good turnout," Traw said. "We originally had about 38 pre-registered, but we've had 52 that have been here."

The students had an opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with their soon-to-be teachers.

"We've got a really good chance to get to know the kids in a small group setting, so it's been wonderful," Baker said.

And students like Witten walked away with a few crucial school-ready skills.

"Things like listening, following directions, just those hands-on things... cutting and pasting," he said.

The Sherman ISD said Kinder Camp was a success, and is already making plans to bring it back next summer.
