SHERMAN, Texas -- A new training facility is in the works for the Sherman Police Department.

Approved by the city just a couple of weeks ago, demolition work on the site is already in full swing.

"We kind of talked to the city and they decided this would be the perfect place for us to build our classroom for future rifle and pistol training classes," Lt. John Kennemer said.

This is the department's first training facility, going up on East Street in the former location of the fire department's training center.

"It's consistent of tearing down the wood, metal, concrete materials, getting them disposed of properly," said Josh Teague of Sherman Demolition.

Construction won't cost the city anything, since funds had been set aside for several years.

The training facility will be more of a classroom setting to supplement the existing pistol range down the road.

"This classroom will work for rifle training, pistol training, any other type of training we're going to do," Kennemer said. "If we get approved to become our own police academy, then we'll probably be doing a lot of our training down here for that."

The State of Texas requires 618 hours of training to become a police officer.
