ARDMORE, Okla. -- Like many Texoma animal shelters, Ardmore Animal Care has seen an increase in the number of pets they've received.

Director Kasey Renteria said spaying and neutering cats and dogs could help alleviate the crisis.

"Most of them coming in have been litters of puppies or kittens that the owner has the mother, and then they accidentally give birth to litters that they don't want," she said.

Ardmore Animal Care also deals with lost pets. Some owners don't know where begin their search.

"If you've lost your pet, please come look for it," Renteria said. "People sometimes think, 'Aw, their pet's too cute for anyone to ever bring it to us,' and that's not true. Come look for it; it may be here."

To deal with overcrowding, the shelter is offering services to spay and neuter your current pet.

"We do offer a low cost spay and neuter clinic that you are welcome to call and schedule with. It's 465-6692," Renteria said. "That's the only way we can reduce the population."

The shelter is also offering incentives for anyone with room in their home and heart for a new pet..

"For those that have been here two weeks or longer, special needs, seniors... all of those are half-price adoptions," Renteria said.

In addition, all cat adoptions on Wednesday, July 17 are just $5.

Volunteer Carson Henley said adopting a pet is a win-win for everyone involved.

"I feel like everyone should adopt," he said. "Everyone needs a loyal companion at home, and there's tons of homeless dogs out there, and you're saving a life when you adopt."

KTEN is partnering with animal care facilities across Texoma for the 5th annual Clear the Shelters event on Saturday, August 17.
