SHERMAN, Texas -- The Walton sisters are hoping for a "yes" from their parents so they can take their Bella girl home.

Being dog people, they stopped by the Sherman Animal Shelter to find a four-legged friend, and soon fell in love with a shelter pup.

They came just in time; the shelter is struggling with an overcrowding problem.  Dogs are at 191 percent capacity, and the facility is also overflowing with cats.

"It's the summer months, and this is generally the highest intake for animal shelters this time of the year," said Ty Coleman of the Sherman Animal Shelter.

Hoping people come out and find a furry friend, the shelter has reduced its adoption fee to $25 for both cats and dogs.

"That adoption fee includes spay, neuter, microchip, de-worming, plenty of vaccines for the dog... pretty much everything is included in that adoption fee," Coleman said.

The Sherman Animal Shelter is not a "no-kill" shelter, so the clock is ticking for some of its residents. The shelter receives around 2,800 dogs a year. Right now, about half of them do not find an adoptive home and are euthanized.

"We are shooting for starting in October and hoping with the community's support and the rescues in the area that we can achieve a 90 percent release rate starting in October and moving forward," Coleman said.

On August 17, KTEN is joining other NBC stations around the country to find forever homes for unwanted pets. Last year, our Clear the Shelters campaign helped find new homes for more than 280 animals. Watch for more information soon on  KTEN and KTEN.com.
