Fatal crash closes highway near Stratford

PONTOTOC COUNTY, Okla. -- Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said one person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a head-on crash on US 177/State Highway 3W early Thursday afternoon.

Investigators said the accident happened about two miles south of Asher when a northbound pickup truck driven by Stephen La Pointe of Oklahoma City crossed the center line.

Asher's vehicle sideswiped a a tractor-trailer and then collided with a southbound pickup truck.

Asher, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the other pickup truck -- Randall Recher and passenger Velma Recher, both of Newalla -- were trapped in the wreckage for about an hour before Ada firefighters could get them out. The Rechers were taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City for treatment of serious to critical injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.

The two-lane highway just south of the Canadian River Bridge in far northwest Pontotoc County was shut down shortly after 12:30 p.m. and remained closed until 4 p.m. as the wreckage was cleared.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
