TISHOMINGO, Okla. -- JAMM Transit was created 20 years ago this fall. The on-demand rural transportation system covers four Texoma counties -- Johnston, Atoka, Marshall and Murray -- and takes people wherever they need to go.

"I've seen little bitty kids now that are big adults we've given rides to, and I've seen many seniors say, 'Hey, I got to stay home,' and that's very, very important," JAMM Transit executive director Laquita Thornley said.

To celebrate two decades of service, JAMM Transit is offering free rides every month to different groups like seniors, students and veterans.

But everyone will have access to free rides in October.

"We wanted to come up with an idea that we could also reward our riders, as well as saying 'Hip, hip hooray!'  for 20 years old," Thornley said. "Let's give something back to them."

To make sure the transportation system could afford to provide free rides, this celebration was planned well in advance.

"We put it in our budget and we planned it out about a year ago," Thornley said. "We have a calendar where everybody can keep up on Facebook."

The free rides will continue through the end of December.
