MADILL, Okla. -- Administrators at Madill Public Schools are hoping off-season work on their athletic field will help the district's football and soccer teams.

In May, the school board decided to install artificial turf at Blake Smiley Stadium to replace a natural grass field, something that should reduce wear. An eight-lane track is also part of the upgrade.

"A lot of people have come up to me and told me how proud they are that we made the decision to do this," said Athletic Director Bink Stafford. "It's an exciting deal around here."

The new playing surface should be ready for action before the Wildcats' first game this fall.

"Our kids here deserve the best we can do for them, in and out of the classroom," Madill schools Superintendent Larry Case said.  "Getting an eight-lane track and turf that we can use it year-round for our band and soccer and football and everything on it... and we're just very excited for what it's going to do for the community as a whole."
