Denison police warn about fake checks

Posted: Updated:

DENISON, Texas -- Denison police say they're seeing more reports of counterfeiters plying their trade with bogus checks.

The most recent incident was reported over the weekend at a local bank.

Police spokesman Lt. Mike Eppler urges banks or any business where checks are cashed to give them more than a cursory examination.

"Sometimes they even have the proper account number and so forth, and of course that all relates back to identity theft," he said. "We get back to telling people: Dispose of your bank statements and your paperwork properly shredded...  don't just throw them away, because things like this can happen."

Law enforcement urges consumers to keep an eye on your accounts and to report any questionable transactions.
