SHERMAN, Texas -- We watch what we put into our body, but how much do you pay attention to what you feed your pet?

"I’m afraid of what might happen to my dogs if they get that bad food in them," said Ronny Kimberlin, who has two dogs.

Pet parents are panicking after the Food and Drug Administration released a report linking 16 pet food brands to more than 500 cases of heart disease.

"These reports are small numbers of dogs in the grand scheme of how many dogs are eating these diets," said Dr. David Tidwell, veterinarian for Texoma Veterinary Hospital in Sherman.

This report just part of an investigation by the FDA into whether "grain-free" foods could be causing canine heart disease in some dogs, but the results are not concrete yet.

"Diet may play a role, but in addition to that, they know genetics and breeds -- things like that -- can definitely affect it as well," Tidwell said. "Symptoms of heart disease in dogs are going to be coughing, sometimes exercise intolerance, distended abdomen, things like that."

Of course, if you’re worried about your best friend, head over to your vet.

"They can look at the potential predisposition of your dog’s breed, what diets you’re on, help guide you to a diet that might be better or one that might put your mind at ease," Tidwell said.

These dog food brands were named most frequently in the FDA's report:
