PONTOTOC COUNTY, Okla. -- State troopers said two people were killed early Wednesday morning when their car was hit by a pickup truck that crossed the center lane of a highway near Ada.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, the truck -- driven by 44-year-old Nathan Nolen of Ada -- was headed east on State Highway 3E 2.5 miles southeast of Ada when it slammed head-on into a westbound Chrysler.

The driver of the Chrysler died after being trapped in the wreckage for an hour. She was identified as Deborah Smithee, 49, of Stonewall.

A passenger in her vehicle, 49-year-old Charles Coffman of Tupelo, also died at the scene. Tommy Hendley, 57, of Stonewall, another passenger, was airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in critical condition.

Nolen was also injured in the wreck and was last reported in stable condition at the Oklahoma City hospital.

Troopers said the cause of the fatal crash remains under investigation.
