Small earthquake rattles Grayson County

Posted: Updated:

POTTSBORO, Texas -- Did you feel it?

The U.S. Geological Survey said a small earthquake rattled part of Grayson County just west of Pottsboro on Monday afternoon, the first to strike the county in more than five years.

"It was very loud... picked the chair [up]... it was big!" said Pottsboro resident Ken Kelley. "Nobody had ever experienced anything like that."

The magnitude 2.8 tremor struck at 3:55 p.m. The epicenter was located along Hagerman Road just west of State Highway 289, about one mile northwest of North Texas Regional Airport.

"I never thought an earthquake would hit here... but it did," said Jeff Qussa. "It happened in less than a second ... thought somebody had hit the house."

USGS said it received five reports from individuals who felt light to moderate shaking after the quake, but no damage was reported.

Archives indicate that there were a series of three similar-sized quakes in the same general area in December, 2013. No other tremors have been recorded in Grayson County over the past decade.

The University of Texas at Austin said there are fault lines throughout the state, but earthquakes are out of the ordinary in Pottsboro.

"We came around to figure out what was going on.. I thought a train had hit the trestle, derailed, or using blasting for something in the fields," Kelley said. "We didn't see any smoke; I think everyone out here felt it pretty well."

The RED marker below is the location of Monday's earthquake; the BLUE markers indicate the epicenters of the 2013 earthquakes.
