Officers responded at around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday to an abduction call at a gas station in the 2100 block of South Broadway. A 25-year-old mother told them that while she was inside the gas station, someone stole her minivan with her three children inside: two boys, ages 6 months and 18 months, and a 2-year-old girl.

"The investigation revealed that the mother had turned off the van and went inside the store, leaving the keys inside the van," Capt. Brent Allred said. "Barajas, who was a passenger of a silver SUV, parked next to the van, exited the vehicle and got into the maroon Town and Country, driving through the parking lot and eastbound out on Kinkaid."

The SUV then left and headed north on Broadway.

Police were able to recover the van and locate the children safely in the 1500 block of South Gold, where Barajas allegedly abandoned it.

"The children were, of course, scared, but unharmed and were reunited with their parents," Capt. Allred said.

Barajas was arrested following a traffic stop at Kellogg and Tyler Road. Allred said he was in a stolen vehicle reported through the sheriff's office.

Capt. Allred said 55-year-old Wesley Coleman was driving the SUV at the gas station on Broadway, and he was later arrested for driving while suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"He was not arrested for any charges from this initial incident. However, we will be presenting all the facts in this case to the district attorney's office to determine any charges that will be presented against these individuals."

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Barajas has prior convictions of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, robbery, drug possession.
