SHERMAN, Texas -- Many children in North Texas go hungry because school nutrition programs are suspended during the summer months.

But a partnership between an area hospital and a food pantry plans to help set the table for young people in Grayson County.

"The shelves behind us are not as full as the rest of the pantry," said Sandra Dean of MasterKey Ministries. "Cereal is a very important need."

Captain Crunch, Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch are just a few cereals many area children will now get with help from Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital and MasterKey Ministries in Sherman.

"We're collecting cereal," said hospital employee Brian Halley. "We've partnered with MasterKey Ministries, and this is our third annual time to do this."

Last year's summer cereal drive collected more than 55,000 servings to help families in need.

"We are so grateful to have Baylor Scott & White to come alongside and do this cereal drive at this critical time of the year," Dean said.

During the summer months, many food pantries run low on cereal and other foods due to the high demand.

"We decided on breakfast foods mainly because we noticed that two-thirds of kids at Sherman ISD qualify for free lunches during the school year," explained Marc Devorset of Baylor Scott & White. "In the summer, you run a risk of not having a meal, and we think that this is a great stop-gap measure for them."

Cereal donations are being accepted at the hospital at 3601 North Calais Street in Sherman until Friday, June 14.
