ADA, Okla. -- For the past 61 years, the train at Ada's Wintersmith Park has become an icon.

Wintersmith has plenty to offer, but the train sets always sets itself apart.

"It's not at all unusual to have somebody come up to the concession stand and say, 'We're from wherever, we don't have anything like this,'" said Kiwanis Club president Don Mauch.

As much as people have enjoyed the train, its days could be numbered. For this train to keep on rolling, it needs about $500,000 worth of repairs to restore the train and its tracks.

"It's getting old, taken a lot of repairs," Kiwanis Club treasurer Bob Vavrick said. "Our track ... even from the beginning it was not all new track, it was used track."

To jump-start a fundraising campaign, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada held a golf tournament Monday, with all proceeds going toward the train's repairs.

"And so this is kind of our kick-off event to start raising money for a brand new train and track down at Wintersmith Park," Vavrick said.

Once Kiwanis counts the money raised at Monday's event, they'll determine what else they need, and hit the fundraising trail even harder.

"We'll be going out trying to raise donations, and we'll figure out what other kinds of fundraisers we can do," Vavrick added.
