DENISON, Texas -- The City of Denison is moving forward with a plan to establish quality neighborhoods by creating affordable housing.

"Our vision is to be the community of choice," Mayor Janet Gott said.

And that's been the city's vision since it first implemented an affordable housing program in 2010.

Now they're one step closer to being that "community of choice" as efforts are focused on a new rental housing program..

"There's just a huge opportunity with our rental units to help ensure they're safe and effective, and that we're providing that for folks that want to live in rental housing," said City Manager Jud Rex.

With more than 3,600 homes in the city now being rented, the city is using all tools available to keep moving forward by improving property values and encouraging investment in existing properties.

"We are kind of a magnet for people moving here, because there's so many jobs available," Rex said. "We need to make sure there's housing for everybody that wants to come live in Denison."

The mayor said having affordable housing has resulted in at least 80 first-time homeowners.

"We have Victorian homes, mid-century modern, and our renovation program has allowed 80 of those to be saved and renovated and turned into beautiful homes that citizens are proud to own," Gott said.

A community forum is planned for Thursday, June 20 for residents interested in the rental housing program.
