SHERMAN, Texas -- Fourth-grader Sa'lasja Chapman usually rides to school with her mom, but Monday morning was different.

The Sherman Fire Department partnered with the school district to plan a very special ride for Sa'Lasja and six other elementary students aboard a fire vehicle.

"In our district, we're always thinking of unique ways to celebrate our students and also partner with our community members," explained  Sherman Independent School District spokeswoman Kimberly Simpson.

"It's awesome being able to see their smiles," Sherman Fire Marshal Billy Hartsfield said. "Just something as simple as a ride to school makes their day."

On Monday, the truck for Sa'Lasja's ride to Washington Elementary School was called out to a fire, so instead she got a personal escort from the fire chief himself.

"Really exciting!" she said.

"We hope that it's something that they'll remember for a lifetime, and hope that it's something to motivate them to continue to do great in school," Simpson said.

The seven students chosen were nominated by teachers for excellent work throughout the year.

"We're all about building Bearcats, and if we can use a small token like a ride to school to motivate these kids and a payment for a good school year, that's an honor for us," Hartsfield said.
