DENISON, Texas -- There's just one finalist in the competition to fill Denison's vacant police chief position.

After an extensive nationwide search, the city selected Michael Gudgel to replace Chief Jay Burch, who retired in February.

Gudgel currently serves as deputy chief of the Grand Prairie Police Department near Dallas. He comes from an extensive background in law enforcement.

The city will host an open house to meet Gudgel on Thursday.

Jay Burch had been Denton's police chief since 2011.
