DENISON, Texas -- The Denison Animal Welfare Group is kicking off its Foster Dog Field Trips program.

It lets people who might not be able to commit to owning a dog borrow one for the day. To take part, you must be at least 18 years old and undergo a brief orientation before taking Fido away from the shelter.

"It's pretty stressful in here for animals," said DAWG president Stephanie Phillips. "It's loud, it's noisy, there is a lot of smells. So we want to get them out into the community where they can relax and really show what their personalities are like."

Heather Keener took advantage of the program.

"You just come in, bring your drivers license, tell them a little bit about yourself, and you sign some paperwork," she said. "We just want to give every single one of them the best opportunity possible... plus it's a really cool activity to do."

Phillips hopes this program will help get more shelter dogs adopted.
